Events and traditions
The most important traditional event is without doubt the famous Procession of Venerdi’ Santo (Holy Friday). Almost the entire Island takes part in the preparation. Children and teenage boys prepare the “misteri” (floats) representing scenes of Jesus Christ’s life which are then carried from the top of Terra Murata to the Port. The graphic statue of the “Cristo Morto” (Dead Christ), concludes the Procession of the “misteri” along with music of a solemn march and the silence of the participants in the gathered crowd.
The Procession of Holy Friday is an event not to be missed in its deep religiosity. The principal holiday of the Summer is the “Sagra Del Mare” (Festival of the Sea) during which the famous romance of Lamartine is remembered with a pageant and the winner chosen from the beautiful girls of the island. In November the people of Procida celebrate “Sagra del Vino” (Festival of Wine) which has gained a reputation as something to attend in the entire Region.
